Why the Picky Eater's Picky:
Assessing Sensory and Motor Barriers to Eating
Presented by Jessica Lewis, MS, OTR/L

Thursday July 17, 2014
11:00am - 12:30pm EST

Webinars are one and a half hour online presentations geared towards professionals. Participants who call in live have the opportunity to participate in a question/answer session with the speaker.

Individuals with a limited food repertoire, or picky eaters, can be picky for many reasons, including decreased oral motor strength, poor oral motor skills, and/or oral sensory sensitivities. This course will guide healthcare professionals in how to evaluate the skills required to eat a balanced diet. Using a gentle approach participants will examine the foundational skills involved in eating a wide variety of foods, as well as general implications for treatment.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this course participants will be able to:

  1. Identify background information needed to gain a general understanding of why an individual may have a limited diet.
  2. Describe what skills to look at when evaluating a picky eater.
  3. Interpret assessment findings and provide recommendations for moving forward.

Jessica Lewis is a Licensed and Certified Occupational Therapist. She received her Master of Science degree in occupational therapy from the University of New Hampshire. She has experience in pediatrics, particularly in acute mental health and outpatient settings. Jessica is currently the Oral Motor Coordinator at OTA and she continues to develop this area of special interest through evaluation and treatment of children with feeding and oral motor difficulties. She has attended the SOS Approach to Feeding and MORE courses which have expanded this area of knowledge. Jessica has also completed the Sensory Integration Assessment and Intervention certification course (SIPT) and is a certified provider of Therapeutic Listening.
