In 1940, the Warsaw Ghetto wall was built around the neighborhood where Max Glauben’s family lived. Conditions in the ghetto were terrible. As a child, Max’s family relied on him to smuggle food into the ghetto for them to survive.

Max’s family hid in an underground shelter during the 1943 Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, but they were discovered. The entire family was deported to Majdanek Extermination Camp where his younger brother and mother were murdered. Max and his father were selected for work as slave laborers in an airplane factory. His father was murdered in reprisal for three prisoners who had escaped. So, at age 13, Max was an orphan.

In 1944, Max was transferred to the Mielec Labor Camp where he was tattooed with ‘KL’ on his right forearm. He was liberated by American troops on April 23, 1945. An American lieutenant took Max under his wing and he stayed with the soldier’s unit until 1947 when he immigrated to the United States. He met his future wife, Frieda, while he was drafted in the United States Army and the two of them settled in Dallas in 1953. Frieda and Max have three children and seven grandchildren.

Max believes God spared him for a reason: to tell his story. Currently Max speaks at the Dallas Holocaust Museum and elsewhere, sometimes several times a week; his goal is always to tell his story in a way that does not inspire hate. And the more he speaks, the more energized he feels.

 

You are invited to "A Day to Remember with Max Glauben - Holocaust Survivor", a free event open to the community. Please join us for appetizers at 12:15 p.m. in the Northaven UMC Atrium before adjourning to the Sanctuary to hear Max Glauben's compelling presentation at 1:00 p.m. A professionally staffed nursery will be provided during this event for small children (please indicate if your children will need care during the registration process), most school age children will enjoy his presentation! This event is presented free of charge, though a donation will be taken towards Mr. Glauben's speaking honorarium and to allow us to continue offering programs like this. Mr. Glauben will be selling DVD's after the lecture.
