Topic:

Dr. Bailey will lead participants in an engagement with the teachings of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7).  No portion of Scripture has been more influential in renewing church and society than these words of Jesus.  Taking these remarkable teachings of Jesus seriously will deepen understanding and invite new perceptions and practices for individuals and congregations.  In his interactive approach, Jim will draw on the resources available in his recent book Contrast Community: Practicing the Sermon on the Mount.  It offers explanation and interpretation of each major text in the Sermon on the Mount as well as quotes, questions, application exercises, songs and prayers for actively engaging the passage.

Contrast Community is published by Wipf and Stock (www.wipfandstock.com) in both electronic and paperback forms.  Paperback copies of Bailey's book will be available for purchase ($15 per copy) at the workshop.

Presenters:

James L. Bailey is the John S and William A. Wagner Professor Emeritus of Biblical Theology at Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, IA. He grew up in central Ohio, graduating from Capital University and Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus.  He earned a PhD in New Testament Studies at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.

After serving as pastor in Cincinnati, Ohio, Jim taught at Trinity Lutheran Seminary (1970-74), Concordia College in Moorhead, MN (1975-1985), and Wartburg Seminary (1985-present).  He retired from full-time teaching in 2003, and worked part-time for the Sout-Central Synod of Wisconsin, ELCA, as the Director of the Lay School of Ministry until 2010. Since retirement, Jim has taught a few courses and has completed Contrast Community: Practicing the Sermon on the Mount, a book designed for interactive group study in congregations.

Jim and his wife Judy have two adult sons, two daughts-in-law, and five grandchildren.  After residing in Dubuque, IA, for 29 years the Baileys have recently moved to Duluth, MN.
