Pediatrics for the Integrative Medicine Practitioner

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Children are not small adults.  They differ from adults in their illnesses, their response to illnesses and to treatments.  This program will cover the important issues in pediatric integrative medicine such as the safety and use of supplements, herbs and other therapeutic interventions.  Additionally, common pediatric problems and interventions from an integrative medicine perspective will be discussed.

The primary objective of this course is to provide a better understanding of the approach, assessment and treatment of children from the different perspectives that comprise integrative medicine.  With this background, better treatment decisions in the treatment of children can be made with regards to both safety and effectiveness. Where available, evidence for treatments will be reviewed.

TOPICS
Part one:  General Background

  • General Introduction and discussion of uniqueness of children
  • Approach and evaluation of children
  • How to get children to accept therapy
  • Therapeutic interventions and pediatrics: Is it safe?
  • Choosing and integrating therapies
  • Nutrition, Diet and Lifestyle in children

Part two: Common Pediatric Problems

  • Upper respiratory:  URTIs, ear, sinus infections
  • Asthma and bronchitis
  • Gastrointestinal Problems
  • UTIs, Genito-urinary Problems
  • Dermatological conditions
  • ADHD and Autism and Behavioral issues

COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon successful completion of this program, the student will be able to:

  • Understand and appreciate the unique differences of children when compared to adults
  • More easily and effectively establish rapport and assess children with medical problems
  • Understand the effects of nutrition and lifestyle in pediatric health care
  • Know what treatments that can be offered to the pediatric patient/client safely.
  • Be able to recommend and apply various treatment strategies for frequently seen pediatric problems.

The program content will be presented in lecture format.

Hour 1: Introduction, uniqueness of children, Approaching and evaluating the child
Hour 2: Therapeutic approaches: principles and theory in pediatrics
Hour 3: Therapeutic approaches: safety, acceptance and integration
Hour 4:  Nutrition, Diet and Lifestyle in children/Immune system 

Part Two

Hour 5: Respiratory Disorders: Upper respiratory Disorders, Asthma and Bronchitis
Hour 6: Gastrointestinal Problems
Hour 7: Dermatology/UTIs and Genito-urinary Problems
Hour 8: ADHD, Autism and Behavioral problems
