Steven Charleston is a Native American elder, a citizen of the Choctaw Nation, and a bishop in the Episcopal Church. He has been a professor of theology and Native American tradition at three major seminaries and has received three honorary doctorates. In 2014 Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, named a building after him to honor his work in inter-faith cooperation. “When we express our love for the earth God has given us, for the natural beauty and wonder of the earth, we’re moved spiritually to want to embrace that, nurture and protect it,” says Bishop Steven Charleston, one of the founders of Whole Creation Community, an online Facebook group, inviting all faiths to live a more eco-friendly and spiritual life. Widely recognized as a leading proponent for justice issues and for spiritual renewal in the church in both the United States and Canada, Steven has been called “one of the best preachers in the Episcopal Church,” leading worship services ranging from a revival style service in Texas to Lenten Services at Harvard University. Bishop Charleston is the founder of Red Moon Publications. Thousands read his spiritual meditations posted daily on Facebook, some of which have been collected in his two books, Hope as Old as Fire and Cloud Walking, widely acclaimed for their deep spiritual vision and for their ability to bring people of widely different faith journeys together. His newest book, CLIMBING STAIRS OF SUNLIGHT, collects all of the meditations Steven wrote spontaneously during his early morning devotions in the year 2013. They are meant for people of all walks of life. Steven Charleston’s books of meditations have become something of a global phenomenon. They come from the daily writings he does each day for the thousands of people who follow him on Facebook. As members of this growing community share his words with others, his messages reach out to countless numbers of people from every spiritual tradition and from every culture. They speak a universal language of hope and healing. They are bringing people together in an age when community is needed more than ever before. Bishop Charleston has served as the national director for Native American ministries in The Episcopal Church, the Bishop of Alaska, and the President and Dean of the Episcopal Divinity School. Currently, he is Visiting Professor of Native American Theology at the Saint Paul School of Theology at Oklahoma City University. |
