Why I wrote From the Hood to Harvard. The name says it all! As a single mother I found the keys that aided me in getting my daughter From the Hood to Harvard, despite life's distractions and disappointments. After teaching parenting classes for several years, I discovered that:

• Parents were working from an old model in which they were not aware of what success looks like in various stages of a child's life. As a result many of their expectations were too high for a 2 year-old and too low for a 12 year-old. 

• During this teaching experience I found it difficult to find written material that recognized my cultural and socio-economical truths.
