Facebook Firings & Social Media Discipline Webcast Coffee

Social media has changed the face of the American workplace and employers are scrambling to respond. Yet this new means of communication has significant legal pitfalls that employers need to understand to protect against. The rules for disciplining and terminating employees for their social media posts keep changing. Learn some best practices for drafting a social media policy that will help to avoid some of the problems employers have found themselves in as a result of the new social media. Please join Melissa Fleischer attorney at law, as she shows you step by step what you need to know and do before you either discipline or terminate an employee for comments they post on social media sites. Learn how to turn Twitter, MySpace, and other social media into your allies rather than becoming just obstacles to effective employee supervision.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:

  • How you can lawfully terminate employees for what they say on social media sites, like Facebook and MySpace.
  • See how recent actions by the NLRB against employers who have terminated employees for what they posted on social media sites might apply to your employer.
  • Review the practical implications of recent case law where employers have terminated employees for comments they made on social media sites.
  • Understand the requirements of state laws that prohibit termination of employees for lawful off-duty conduct.
  • What constitutes lawful off-duty conduct as it relates to social media postings?
  • Get tips for drafting social media policies which better protect your employer and learn how to document your actions for violations of your policy.
  • Learn what legal pitfalls to avoid when writing your social media policy.

Presenter:

Your speaker for “Facebook Firings & Social Media Discipline: What Employers Should Do Now” is Melissa Fleischer, attorney at law. Ms. Fleischer is a management-side employment attorney with 20 years of experience representing clients in employment law discrimination litigation as well as providing preventive counseling and training on workplace issues.
