The Role of IPM (Integrated Pest Managment) in Sustainabile Agricultural Practices - Thomas A. Green, Ph.D., CCA, TSP, President, IPM Institute of North America, Inc.

Dr. Thomas A. Green managed an apple orchard early in his career, and became captivated by the pest management challenges faced by growers. This led to pursuit of a career in IPM, working initially in the Massachusetts Apple IPM Program. In 1980, he founded an IPM supply business subsequently purchased by GEMPLER'S, Inc., a national agricultural product supplier. He is a Certified Crop Advisor and NRCS Technical Service Provider.  He has served on the US EPA Pesticide Policy Dialogue Committee, chaired the International IPM Symposium Steering Committee, and currently serves as board chair of the Entomological Foundation, member of the Exam Committee of the Certified Crop Advisor Program, and member of the Stakeholder Committee for the USDA North Central IPM Center. He has been recognized with awards from US EPA, USDA and the International IPM Symposium.  Dr. Green holds a Ph.D. in Entomology from the University of Massachusetts.

The "Business" of Scientific Research - Michael Brownbridge, Ph.D., Research Director - Horticultural Production Systems, Vineland Research Centre

Dr. Michael Brownbridge earned his Honours B.Sc. in Agricultural Zoology and his Ph.D. from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne in the UK. Dr. Brownbridge joined the University of Vermont’s Entomology Research Laboratory in 1990 as a Research Assistant Professor. Throughout his 15 years with the University of Vermont, Dr. Brownbridge focused on forest pest management and developing IPM tools and systems for pests of greenhouse ornamentals. During this time he also studied the effects of microbial control agents and GM maize on non-target beneficials and soil-dwelling microarthropods. In 1997, Dr. Brownbridge received a notable promotion to the position of Research Associate Professor.

In 2005, Dr. Brownbridge joined AgResearch in New Zealand where his work was primarily focused in pastoral and plantation forest pest management, with a strong emphasis on the transition of research products and knowledge aimed towards leading industry partners.

Dr. Brownbridge brings an extensive research background in greenhouse technologies and pest management to the Horticultural Production Systems unit at Vineland. He leads a research team in the area of biocontrol and IPM systems for greenhouse floriculture, nursery and landscape horticulture in addition to developing sustainable lawn turf management techniques for industry. One of Vineland's flagship programs ‘World Crops', which was developed with value chain stakeholders in response to changing Canadian demographics, is spearheaded by Dr. Brownbridge. This program is delivering fresh, healthy ethno-cultural vegetables to the Canadian consumer.
