Illuminating the Shadow
In Psychological Types, C. G. Jung defined eight types of consciousness: introverted intuition, extraverted intuition, introverted sensation, extraverted sensation, introverted feeling, extraverted feeling, introverted thinking, and extraverted thinking. In analyzing individuals, however, he normally referred to only four types of consciousness, speaking of the superior, auxiliary, tertiary, and inferior functions of consciousness. Early MBTI(R) practitioners also addressed only four functions.
By looking at the shadow, Jungian analyst John Beebe has been able to answer the question: Where are the other four types of consciousness in each of us? Using clips from classic Hollywood films, Dr. Beebe will demonstrate how the shadow expresses itself through four archetypes--the Opposing Personality, the withering Senex or Witch, the Trickster, and the Demon/Daimon.
John Beebe, a past president of the C. G. Jung Institute of San Francisco, is the author of Integrity in Depth, co-author of The Presence of the Feminine in Film, and co-editor of The Question of Psychological Types: The Correspondence of C. G. Jung and Hans Schmid-Guisan, 1915-1916. A recipient of the President’s Award for Exceptional Service from the Association for Psychological Type International, Beebe has written about psychological types for numerous books and journals. His eight-function, eight-archetype model of type is widely studied and applied in the field. In addition, he has spearheaded a Jungian typological approach to the analysis of film.
