 Our Faculty

International Faculty ~ Queen of Harmony - International Board of Directors - Master 700 Director ~ Expression Judge

As the daughter of a barbershopper,   Dale has been a part of the Sweet Adelines organization since she was a child.  Dale serves as the Master Director of the Rich-Tone Chorus and has been with them in that capacity since 1976.  In that time, the chorus has grown from 18 members to over 150.  Like Rembrandt or Picasso, Dale is a master artist who paints music with her hands.  Dale's creative and musical expertise comes from over 40 years of training and directing experience in the Sweet Adelines organization.  Dale's unique artistic talents are in such high demand that she travels the world coaching quartets and choruses, and educating members through her continual participation in workshops, seminars and music schools.  With over 43 years as a Sweet Adeline, Dale has garnered an impressive list of achievements.  Here are a few of her many honors

  • Master Director/Master 700 Director                                                             Dale Syverson
  • Rich-Tone Chorus Director (1976 to present)

Showmanship Judge ~ International Past-President ~ Queen of Harmony ~ Master Director

Mention Peggy Gram to members of Sweet Adelines and you might hear her described as a well-known and admired musician, a long-time leader, teacher and role model in the organization and a 30+ year quartet member who has sung as a lead, baritone and a bass.  Once Peggy finally discovered her smooth and mellow bass voice, she quickly became a two-time international quartet champion.  Peggy has been a chorus director for 30 years, taking Top of the Rock chorus to a Region 25 championship several times and once winning the Harmony Achievement Award.

In her professional life, Peggy has worked for the State of Arkansas for 31 years, and currently seerves as the Chief Deputy Secretary of State for the State of Arkansas.

FEATURING THESE EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES:

NEW Regional Song!  We have a new regional song called "It's My Song" and music and learning tracks are on the regional website under the "Members Only" section.  Hopefully, we'll have one or more opportunities to practice this song at FLASH.  This song will be used in the Riser-Placement class.  Participation in the riser placement class chorus is now closed as we have reached our maximum of 50 participants.

DCP Classes and DCP Testing (Director Certification Program) -    Testing on all DCP modules will be available.

You will want to be like a sponge to soak up everything that Dale and Peggy have to offer us!

Peggy will teach our low-voiced women "How to Be a Great Bass!"  I can't think of a better bass than Peggy from whom to learn these skills.  Barbershop wouldn't be barbershop without BASS!  Learn the tricks of the trade, singing lyrical bass - the foundation of the sound, setting up the overtone series and taking care of your voice.

She'll also offer a class on "Listening Skills."  How often do you hear, "I can hear that it's not quite right, but how do I know what is wrong? And how wrong is it?"  This class is all about how to listen and what to listen for.

Peggy will also be teaching a new class on "Stage Makeup."  What is it that stage makeup is supposed to do and how do we accomplish it?  Are you just supposed to layer it on till you look like a lady of the evening and you're done?  This class will give you the answers.

Another class by Peggy - The Showmanship Category! - True or False - All Showmanship judges can count the number of spangles on a costume at 100 yards and your score is directly proportional to that number.  To learn the answer to this and other questions about this category, join us for this class!

.....and for our organizational leaders.... "Communication Skills for Leaders" - The biggest mistake in communication is believing that it has happened.  How do we keep our members informed?  Reach consensus?  Peggy will show you how.

Something we can all benefit from - "How to Give Yourself a PVI" - Can you make yourself a better singer?  become your own vocal coach?  With this class, Pegy will teach you tips on how to coach yourself.

Dale will lead a class on "Designing a Dynamic Plan."  This class has a targeted audience of musical leaders and quartet singers, but it is one where even the general membership can learn a lot about our craft. For this same audience but with general appeal is a class on "The Art and Science of Barbershop Ballads"  You know when you have experienced a "moment," when a quartet or chorus touches something inside you with their presentation of a song?  What is it that makes their presentation so unique and hearfelt?  Come find out!

To open the festivities, Dale's Friday night class will be "Sing, Baby, Sing"  which focuses on the popular vocal program developed a few years ago.  Come discover these tried and true techniques for improving vocal production, stamina and quality.

Dale will also present a class entitled, "The Color of Sound."  In this class, she will explore the sound category and the myriad of sound layers that our collective voices can produce.  The various textures and colors of sound provide the nuances, interest and depth that separates the champions from the rest.  Explore sound in a way you have never experienced before!

Also, there will be an in-depth class on "Blending."  Sure, we all say we know how to blend, but there is much more to it.  What are the responsibilties of each voice part, where am I in the chord?  Blending is a fine science and deserves our attention.  Come learn how to BLEND!

Finally, Dale and Peggy will team up to do a "Riser-Placement" class.  At the request of some of our directors, Dale and Peggy have agreed to lead us through the process of riser-placing by voice, a small chorus and then expanding that to a larger group.  If you have not watched this process before, it is fascinating to watch how the different qualities of the individual voices affect the sound quality of the overall product.  There really is a science behind where your director has placed you on the risers - come learn why you stand where you do!

Additionally, we have spots open for Personalized Vocal Instruction( PVIs), Quartet coaching and don't forget about our Saturday Night Show featuring our International Competitors!

We also have "The Voices" competition, which is our revived Region 19 Novice Quartet Contest!   We have five brand new quartets, Sidetracked, Melody, JewelTones, Singchronicity and Pearl competing for the very first time.  We hope you will be in the audience on Friday evening to cheer on these wonderful new additions to our family of regional quartets!  Then need and deserve your support!

Philadelphia Freedom Chorus, our hostess chapter for Hot FLASH Carnival, has planned a Menopausal Midway where you will find games, activities, food, gifts and just about anything your heart desires!  Make sure to stop by, say hello and support PFC!
