Playing a Game of Chance:
Understanding the Differences Between Sweepstakes,
Contests and Illegal Lotteries

with Trademark Attorney, Sheri S. Mason

Sweepstakes and contests are a great way to promote your business. However, there is a fine line between conducting legal sweepstakes or contests and conducting an illegal lottery. In this seminar, Sheri will discuss:

  • What constitutes an illegal lottery
  • Ways to structure contests / sweepstakes to comply with federal & state laws
  • State registration requirements
  • Penalties for conducting an illegal lottery
Join MBBP for this program and then network at the Venture Cafe after our event.
Sheri S. Mason is an Associate at Morse, Barnes-Brown & Pendleton

Her focus is primarily on trademark law, including the selection, screening, prosecution, maintenance, and enforcement of trademarks both domestically and internationally; copyright law, including counseling, registration, and enforcement of copyrights both domestically and internationally; and advertising, sweepstakes and publicity law. Sheri works within a wide range of industries including arts and entertainment, computer hardware and software, life sciences, pharmaceuticals, food and beverages, telecommunications, publishing, manufacturing, apparel, and health and wellness. Prior to joining MBBP, Sheri served as the Director of Legal Services for the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, a program of the Arts and Business Council of Greater Boston.
