Home Made Boat Race 2014

The Center for Coastal Studies will paddle into Whale Week with the 4th Annual Home Made Boat Race on July 28 at 5 pm on Town Beach (behind the Crowne and Anchor), Provincetown.

Use anything you can find to build a watercraft that will carry you and your team to the finish line!

The legendary Jay Critchley will return as Master of Ceremonies the Boat Race again this year, as will judges Candice Collins-Boden from the Provincetown Chamber of Commerce, and Erin Atwood from the Provincetown Business Guild!

Registration is $50 per boat/team and prizes will be awarded based on ingenuity, aesthetics, costumes, and speed.  Participants will also be awarded bonus points for retrieving marine debris during the race, and there is a special prize for the team that raises the most money for the Center.

This event is sponsored by Venture Athletics Water Sports, the Crown and Anchor, and J & E Fruit and Produce

To register, please download and complete this form and return it to the address provided, or click the Register Now button below. Then download your pledge sheet and start working towards winning the prize for raising the most money for the Center!

Your registration fee, sponsor donations and pledges support the Center's Marine Education programs. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

RULES and JUDGING

  1. All Crewmembers must wear type III or higher Coast Guard certified life jackets (PFDs).  You may bring your own PFDs or Venture Athletics can supply them.
  2. All crewmembers must remain with the vessel throughout the entire race.
  3. Everything on your boat must be homemade. No commercial rafts, raft parts, hulls of canoes or kayaks can be used.
  4. Teams constructing boats made solely of marine debris will receive an additional 5 points.
  5. No parts powered by anything other than human power are allowed.  For example, paddle or even pedal style boats are allowed, while anything with a motor is not. Crewmembers must attempt to paddle their vessel. If crewmembers fall off the vessel and must swim, they may not use flippers or other swimming aids.
  6. Purchased paddles are permissible, but you will receive fewer ingenuity points by the judges.
  7. No boats or boat parts must be left in the water.  In the event that a boat breaks apart, crewmembers are responsible for gathering all the debris and bringing it to shore.
  8. All crewmembers must sign a Participant Agreement, Release and Acknowledgment of Risk before participating in the race.  Minors need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian who will need to sign a waiver for them.
  9. Failure to adhere to any of the above rules will result in point deductions.

JUDGING

  1. Boats are judged in 4 categories: ingenuity, aesthetics, costumes, and winning the race.
  2. Each area will receive 5 points (1st place), 3 points (2nd place) and 1 point (3rd place).  Each boat can score an additional one point for each piece of marine debris collected during the race (max. 5).  For example: bring in 5 water bottles found in the water, get an extra five points.  The boat with the highest accumulative total wins the race.
  3. Prizes will be given for the top three teams with the most accumulated points, winner of the race, and the top fund raiser.  In addition, each team will receive one complimentary individual membership to the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies.
