IMPORT-EXPORT: INTERNATIONAL TRADE BASICS 

A Must for Anyone Looking to Join the Global Marketplace

International trade offers excellent opportunities for both start-ups and existing businesses. 
This five -hour workshop, taught by an accomplished and knowledgeable expert in international trade, will give you an overview of what it takes to run an enterprise involving global trade.

This workshop will cover:

  • The role of imports/exports in your business model
  • The basics of international transactions
  • Terminology of the trade (INCOTERMS and others)
  • The role of freight forwarders and customs brokers
  • Payment methods of the international trade (Letters of Credit, Drafts, etc.) their advantages/disadvantages and how they work
  • Harmonized Tariff System
  • US government agencies involved in international trade
  • Key components of quotations (pro-forma invoices) and sales (actual) invoices

Instructors:

Ivan Szanto has more than 30 years of experience in international trade, having served as CEO and Chief Operating Officer of a large import and wholesale distribution company, overseeing all aspects of its business. His responsibilities included personally training the 25–plus key employees of the firm, especially those handling foreign purchases, customs procedures and logistics. He is also well versed in manufacturing processes, as well as in trademarks and contracts.In addition to his industry experience, Ivan has been a SCORE NYC small business counselor for the past 20 years and is knowledgeable about a wide range of issues in many different industries. Ivan is a SCORE NYC Mentor.

Toni Corsini is Senior Trade Finance Specialist and NY/NJ Regional Manager of the SBA office of International Trade at the US Export Assistance Center. Toni was previously VP and Manager of Trade Services Marketing and Communication for North America at a large global financial institution.                                                             

She is well known in the business and banking communities, having spent may years in trade finance as a VP for commercial banks in both New York and New Jersey and as an export manager in the manufacturing sector and has conducted classes in international trade and finance at leading corporations and universities in the metro area.                                                

Michael Muth is a Foreign Commercial Service Officer with the U.S. & Foreign Commercial Service, a division of the U.S. Department of Commerce, in New York City.   Muth’s role is to intl trade instructor generate & maintain jobs by assisting U.S. technology, educational, & consulting organizations pursue global markets. 

Prior to this position, Mr. Muth taught international business @ business schools in India & South Africa.  He has big company experience with Xerox, Deutsche Bank, Siemens, & AC Nielsen Marketing Research, & small business experience on his own as an independent consultant.  He also worked in business development for the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs & International Trade & taught @ business schools in Chicago & Poland.

Mr. Muth earned a Master of International Management degree in international finance & trade from the Thunderbird School of Global Management, & a Bachelor of Arts in international economics from the University of Michigan.

Diane Newton, LCB started career with Fritz Companies in 1994 in  New York working data entry on customs entries. Obtained Customs Brokerage License in 1997.  Through acquisition she started her career with UPS Supply Chain Solutions in 2001.  In 2005 she was promoted to manager and relocated to Boston area. Currently a Brokerage Market Manager utilizing her compliance skills to assist in securing new business and implementation. 

Eileen Ziegler is an International Business Development Manager at UPS.  She has an MBA in Marketing and Finance from Pace University and  25+ years  experience in international transportation and logistics.

Acting  as a consultant in understanding the customer’s supply chain processes and needs, she offers customized insight and solutions across all phases of the transportation spectrum.
