Health Practitioners

Workshop location has been changed!

The Tulane School of Social Work is proud to offer at 3-hour CEU workshop entitled "Psychotropic Medication Education Training for Mental Health Practitioners" by Dr. Barry Pilson, MSW. Dr. Pilson has almost 40 years of experience as a mental health practitioner and has been conducting mental health and addiction workshops since 1984. Tulane MSW candidates Carly E. Junca and Cassandra Adams organized the workshop as part of their professional projects and will be presenting as well.

The continuing education program, Psychotropic Medication Education Training Program for MHP's, has been moved to the Tulane School of Public Health's Tidewater Building to accommodate more participants.  This workshop will be held on Saturday, Sept. 13 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Diboll Auditorium at the Tulane School of Public Health, 1440 Canal Blvd New Orleans, Louisiana 70112. Sign-in will begin at 8:30 a.m.  This workshop is offered free of charge.

This workshop will: 

  • Educate MHP’s about psychotropic medications, the benefits, concerns, and ethical implications, to enhance knowledge and comfortability.
  • Increase awareness about how to educate client’s and their family members on psychotropic medication, adherence, side effects, etc. as well as assist client’s to harness the skills to make educated and informed decisions about their treatment.
  • Inform collaborative practices when working alongside prescribing physicians.
  • Help practitioners gain a better understanding of MHP’s roles in relation to psychotropic medication to harness the skills and strategies needed to best serve client’s taking psychotropic medications and their family members.

9:00 to 9:15 a.m. -- Introduction to Psychotropic Medication & Pre-Test

9:15 a.m. to 10 a.m. -- Brief Principles on the Body & Psychotropic Medication by Dr. Barry Pilson

10 to 10:15 a.m. --  Break

10:15 to 10:45 a.m. -- Types of Psychotropic Medication

10:45 to 11 a.m. -- Side Effects & Working with Special Populations by MSW candidate Carly E. Junca

11:00 to 11:15 a.m. -- Break

11:15 to 11:30 a.m. -- Mental Health Practitioner's (MHPs) Role in Psychotropic Medication

11:30 to 11:45 a.m. -- Effective Collaboration & Ethical Considerations

11:45 a.m. to Noon -- Medication Education for Clients & Family Members by Cassandra Adams

12:00 to 12:15 p.m. -- Case Examples, Conclusion, and Questions

12:15 to 12:30 p.m. -- Post Test by Carly & Cassandra

Registration Information and Fees
This workshop is offered free of charge, but you must register to attend. Also, the event is limited to 100 participants, so please sign up early to reserve your spot.

Parking Information
The entrance to the School of Public Health is on Canal Street and LaSalle is the cross street.  There is off street parking in lots on Canal and Cleveland and street parking. Since this is a Saturday, any metered spots will be running from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., so participants are encouraged to use a surface lot or parking garage.
