Presented by Dr. José Artecona, MD
Psychiatrist and Addictionologist, St. Christopher's Addiction Wellness Center 

Objectives: Participants will be able to describe methods of identification for impaired professionals. Participants will be able to explain treatment options for impaired professionals.

Dr. José Artecona is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry, Section of Forensic Psychiatry.  Dr. Artecona is a graduate from the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, 1999.  He completed a residency at Tulane University School of Medicine, New Orleans, LA, 2003.  He holds certifications from the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology, Psychiatry, the  American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology, Forensic Psychiatry; American Society of Addiction Medicine.

Objectives: Define several aspects of success treatment completion in terms of individual accomplishments. Explain how stressors are related to the recovery process and emphasize the need to develop a balanced lifestyle. Available post treatment options will be identified and presented.

Issac L. Boose is a Licensed Professional Counselor, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist as well as a Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor. He presently works as the director of Pine Grove Next Step and has been a part of the Next Step team since December 2004. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland European Division and a Masters Degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Mississippi. He is an active member and president of the Mississippi Association of Addiction Professional. His experience in the counseling profession includes working with school-aged children as a school based counselor, counseling senior citizens in a hospital setting, community mental health counseling and residential alcohol and drug counseling. While working within these settings he has provided couples, family, group and individual therapy.

11:15 A.M. - "Sex Addiction in the 21st Century"
Presented by Doug White, MA, CTRS, ASAT, CI
Clinical Therapist, Lighthouse Counseling Center

Objectives: Participants will be able to define the meaning and origin of shame. Participants will be able to discuss the impact of shame in the recovery process. Participants will be able to list methods for screening for signs and symptoms and treatment options for sex addiction.

A near life-long resident of Baton Rouge, Doug White graduated LSU and holds Master’s degrees in both Recreational Therapy and Mental Health Counseling from Southern University. He is also an Associate Sex Addiction Therapist (ASAT), having trained under Dr. Patrick Carnes, and is a member of the International Institute of Trauma and Addiction Professionals (IITAP). With over 20 years as a professional in the mental health field, Doug is equipped to counsel the sexually addicted, married couples in crisis, as well as those struggling with chemical dependency, past abuse, depression and anxiety. Doug has a particular heart for working with men’s issues.  He led Celebrate Recovery, a 12-step recovery program, for seven years at Istrouma Baptist Church, where he facilitated men’s support groups for the sexually addicted as well as taught recovery workshops.

Presented by Debra Jay, Author and Interventionist
Co-Founder of Love First and Pine Grove Legacy Consultant

Objectives: Recognizing and dismantling ageism myths and action-stopping myths that block treatment and recovery. Assessing needs for age-appropriate intervention and treatment, and the types of programming most helpful for this population. Clearly understanding the differences between two aging populations–The Silent Generation and the Baby Boomers–and how these differences affect intervention and treatment. 

Debra Jay is the author of No More Letting Go: The Spirituality of Taking Action Against Alcoholism and Drug Addiction, published by Bantam in 2006. She has also co-authored the bestseller, Love First: A Family’s Guide to Intervention, and Aging and Addiction: Helping Older Adults Overcome Alcohol or Medication Dependence. Her upcoming book, which will be released in December, is titled It Takes a Family: A Cooperative Approach to Lasting Sobriety.”  Ms. Jay regularly appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show for 3 seasons as an addictions expert. She has most recently been seen on The Dr. Oz Show. She is co-founder of private practice, providing clinical intervention training and consultation services to families throughout the United States and internationally. She previously worked as an addictions clinician for the Hazelden Foundation in inpatient treatment, extended care, as the older adult coordinator and facilitator of the family program.

2:15 P.M. - "Supervision and Consultation:  Overlooked, Underappreciated, Underutilized"*
Presented by Dr. Arlene Magee, PhD, LPC, NCC  
Executive Director, St. Christopher's Addiction Wellness Center 

Objectives: Participants will be able to describe the consultation process. Participants will be able to list different styles of supervision. Participants will be able to explain the value of ongoing supervision and consultation.

Dr. Arlene Magee is currently the Executive Director for St. Christopher’s Addiction Wellness Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  She is a graduate of the University of New Orleans, where she received her Masters degree in counseling and a doctorate degree in counseling education.  Dr. Magee has received numerous academic honors and achievements.

3:30 P.M. - "Boundaries and Ethics: Why Do I Need This Course?"*
Presented by Dr. Philip Hemphill, PhD, LCSW
Director, Pine Grove Professional Enhancement Program

Objectives: Learn effective professional boundaries and coping strategies for self-management. Increase personal and professional self-awareness. Identify relevant considerations when professional obligations conflict or ethical uncertainties arise. Establish a set of specific ethical standards to guide one’s practice. Gain strength in identifying core values and stressful life circumstances. Develop cognitive and emotional skills to help manage future professional stressors and circumstances.

Dr. Hemphill has been the Director of the Professional Enhancement Program at Pine Grove Behavioral Health and Addiction Services for the past 10 years.  He is responsible for the management and clinical supervision of professional patients in an intensive outpatient/residential setting struggling with addictive and personality disorders.  He assist with evaluation, treatment planning, direct clinical care, fitness for duty issues, staff training, vocational and professional reintegration, workplace monitoring, staff development, coaching, and administrative management of the program.  Previously, Dr. Hemphill worked at the Masters and Johnson Sexual Trauma and Compulsivity programs in New Orleans, Louisiana for 15 years where he was Director of Extended Care, Director of Research, and Director of Behavioral Therapy.   He has been a consultant to Missouri, Kentucky, and Louisiana social service agencies in developing treatment for juvenile sex offenders.  Between 1993 and 2005, he developed and supervised an outpatient program for juvenile offenders and their families in New Orleans.  He has presented papers and workshops at national conferences and published articles in the field of trauma, personality disorders, and addictions during the past 20 years.  He has been an adjunct professor at Tulane University School of Social Work for the past 15 years and Assistant Clinical Professor at LSU Health Sciences Center, Department of Psychiatry for the past 12 years.  He received his master and doctoral degrees from Tulane University.

Target Audience for All Speakers:

The target audience will be social workers, psychologists, licensed professional counselors, licensed marriage and family therapists, nursing staff and other mental health therapists or graduate students in those fields. Information will be presented at an introductory to intermediate level.

*"The Impaired Professional: Identification & Treatment", "Boundaries and Ethics: Why Do I Need This Course?", and "Supervision and Consultation:  Overlooked, Underappreciated, Underutilized” sessions are available for psychology CE’s, each for 1.25 hours of credit (for up to a total of 3.75 hours). Full attendance is required for each individual session in order to receive CE credit for that particular session. Please also note that the “Boundaries and Ethics: Why Do I Need This Course?” session will count as 1.25 Ethics CE credits for psychology.

Refund policy:

Cancellations of participants must be received by mail or fax at least one week prior to the date of the seminar. Workshop fees, are refundable if cancellation is made at least one week prior to the seminar. No requests for refunds will be honored if received within one week of the date of the seminar. In the event of a cancellation of the workshop, the participant shall receive a full refund for fees paid.
