Comprehension Lesson for Early Readers
Saturday, October 18th
10:00am-12:00pm
Facilitator: Rob Podlasek
This exciting new workshop is designed as a complete comprehension lesson for tutors to incorporate into their sessions with early readers. Often, we are so focused on fluency that we forget to ask if the child understands the text! This workshop is geared toward simplifying the concepts of comprehension through practicing vocabulary strategies, question asking, knowledge checks and reflection activities in a tutoring session. By the end of this workshop, you will better understand how to practice vocabulary and comprehension strategies before, during and after a reading to ensure students understand and engage in the texts they read.
The training will be held at Metro State University. Please park at the lot at 7th Street and Maria Avenue- you will receive a parking voucher to cover the cost. This is the only lot you will get a voucher for! Please click here for a campus map. From the parking lot walk north on Maria to E 7th Street. Cross E 7th and walk west, towards downtown, to the Metro State Library. Once in the library go up the stairs or take the elevator. Room 302 will be at the top of the stairs.
Light snacks will be provided but please feel free to bring your own food as needed.
Tutor training is open to any volunteer or program staff member working with young people in St. Paul.
