The great Australian dream of owning your own home is proving difficult for many as property prices and interest rates continue to climb.

Imagine though that you're a recent refugee with little or no language skills, and just a few dollars in your pocket, who is determined to get into the market no matter what.

Chinese born financial planner Helen Shao set herself that goal when she fled to Australia in the late 80s. 

We'll never know her real name - Helen changed her identity when she fled China in 1989 and started a new life on the streets of Canberra. She came with the equivalent of $64 in her pocket and a very real fear she may never again hold the baby son she'd been forced to leave behind.

Helen survived on anything she could scavenge from garbage bins as well as the determination to be reunited with her son and an inherent knowledge that 'tough times never last, but tough people do'.   

Two decades down the track that mantra tags her fledging but successful business venture, Renovate You - and, if anyone is qualified to help people 'renovate' their lives, it is Helen. Her story takes us from the tragedy of the Tiananmen Square massacre to the joy of a pending marriage. It's a story of strength and survival, resilience and trust, heartache and hope.
