Kayak Through Shipwrecks!

Just an hour south of Washington, DC in a small bay on the Potomac River is the largest collection of shipwrecks in the Western Hemisphere!  The remains of nearly 200 war ships, barges, long boats and even a car ferry can be found in Mallows Bay just across the Potomac from Quantico, VA.  Join Preservation Maryland on Saturday, September 20 as we set off in kayaks to explore Mallows Bay and see these shipwrecks up close.

Most of the ships in the bay make up a ghost fleet of wooden World War I transport ships that were never put into service.  With no use in mind for these steam powered ships, the Navy sold them off, and the salvage company that purchased them sank them in Mallows Bay.  Today portions of ships stick up above the water at low tide and provide a fascinating home for numerous types of birds, fish and plants.  Whether you are interested in history, archaeology, culture, ecology, recreation or education Mallows Bay has something to offer you.

Your guide for the day calls Charles County home and loves to share the history of the area.  After everyone is outfitted with a kayak and life vest, the group will paddle among the ghost ships.  You will learn how the ships got to the bay, what impact they have had on the region and why their preservation is so important for the future of Mallows Bay.

Don't miss your chance to see this amazing sight for yourself!  Space is limited, so be sure to sign up today.
