Community Service Day at Liney Ditch Park in Camden:  Part 2

Liney Ditch Park, Waterfront South Camden

Join Sustainable Cherry Hill and its partners, NJ Tree Foundation,  Center for Environmental Transformation, and Camden County Municipal Utilities Authority (CCMUA) to spruce up the 5-acre public Liney Ditch Park in Camden's Waterfront South community.

Our volunteers will help maintain (prune, mulch, stake if needed) the beautiful shelter-belt of 80+ trees at the park while also helping spruce up the park in general, focusing on areas of overgrowth, trash clean up, and much more! Members of the community will be recruited to join our volunteers in their efforts to help the park. 

We'll work hard, have fun and will be serving refreshments. Volunteers should dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes, and wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Tools, gloves, water, and planting instructions are provided by the NJ Tree Foundation staff. We can accommodate individuals or groups. Children 4+ are welcome with supervision.  We'll meet in the CCMUA parking lot, enter the park through the gate and have access to facilities all morning.

Inconveniently located adjacent to the county's waste water treatment plant and numerous industrial companies, this park serves as a recreational space for hundreds of children each day. The park and the community are disproportionately affected by air pollution and unpleasant odors daily. In October 2013, over 100 new trees were planted by a group of dedicated partners as part of a shelterbelt surrounding the CCMUA Waste Water Treatment Plant. Shelterbelts are vegetation systems that use trees arranged in row or group configurations to redirect wind and reduce wind speeds, thereby modifying environmental conditions within the upwind and downwind sheltered zones. Read more about the shelter-belt project here.

This activity will help us all to understand that we are connected to our neighbors in Camden everytime we flush our toilets, throw our trash away or simply drive by on our way to Philadelphia.  Let's make our connection stronger, more positive and personal as we work side by side with community members to keep Liney Ditch beautiful! 

This event is hosted by the Sustainable Cherry Hill Regional/Urban Partnerships for Sustainability (RUPS) Task Force, which exists in order to engage in partnerships with neighboring towns and cities in order to promote sustainability, broadly defined as causing and maintaining the well being of people in their environments.
