When you think of barns in Maryland, the tobacco barns in southern Maryland are probably the first thing to come to mind, and when you think of bridges in Maryland, you most likely flash back to the last time you crossed the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. On this Preservation Maryland field trip, we want to change how you think of barns, bridges, and Baltimore County!
Did you know that the oldest existing bridge in Maryland, the Parkton Stone Arch Bridge (1806), can be found in Baltimore County? Did you also realize that although much of southern Baltimore County is developed, the northern portions of the county retain their rural field and barns of all sorts are common sights?
This Barns and Bridges field trip starts at Boordy Winery where you will board a bus bound for stops throughout northern Baltimore County including the Parkton Stone Arch, the Masemore Road Bridge, and the Jericho Covered Bridge at Jerusalem Mill. Lunch will be served in an historic barn. Preservation experts from the Preservation Alliance of Baltimore County and the Maryland State Highway Administration will serve as your guides and will share a wealth of knowledge about the development of agriculture and transportation in the region.
The trip will conclude with a visit to the dairy barn at Boordy Vineyards, which now serves as an event space. Afterwards those who want to stay for a wine tasting are encouraged to do so. Whether you are a barn or bridge enthusiast or are just getting interested in these pieces of our industrial and transportation history, you are sure to learn something new on this great field trip.
