There is good news about colorectal cancer (CRC) – the incidence and mortality rates are declining, and there is a substantial increase in screening participation. Not all news is good, however. Colorectal cancer continues to be the second leading cancer killer of men and women in the US, State of Texas, and in the Houston Metroplex. As such, colon cancer continues to be a major public health problem. If we are to stop this preventable disease, all prevention efforts must be intensified.
Hope Through Grace, Inc. (HTG) has joined forces with the American Cancer Society and others to stamp out this disease. In partnership with the Institute for Spirituality and Health, Hope Through Grace, Inc., announces its 10th Annual Symposium – “Addressing Colorectal Cancer: Blending our Worlds of Spiritual and Physical Health."
Attention will be given to progress thus far and to challenges attendant to the intractable incidence and mortality rates of colorectal cancer. Participants will better understand crucial issues regarding risk reduction, increased screening participation rates, status of health care reform, as well as interventions for stamping out CRC. Funding resources for health and wellness programs, testimonies of survivors and caregivers, and recommendations for healthy lifestyle behavioral change also will be addressed.
Keynote speakers include Richard C. Wender, M.D., Chief Cancer Control Officer of the American Cancer Society; Elena M. Marks, J.D., MPH, President and CEO of Episcopal Health Foundation and Health Policy Scholar at Rice University's Baker Institute; and Ronald DePinho, M.D., President of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Also among distinguished presenters are: Karen Basen-EngQuist, Ph.D, M.P.H., Director of the Center for Energy Balance in Cancer Prevention and Survivorship - The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center; Jo Z. Carcedo, MPA, Director of Grant-Marketing - Episcopal Health Foundation; Olethia Chisolm, M.D., FACP, Internist - Kelsey-Seybold Clinic; Ronald R. Cookston, Ed.D., Executive Director Emeritus - Gateway to Care; Lewis E. Foxhall, M.D., Vice President for Health Policy - The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center; Lex Gillan of The Yoga Institute and Consultant to the Institute for Spirituality and Health (Texas Medical Center); John K. Graham, M.D., D.Min, President & CEO - Institute for Spirituality and Health; Linda May, Executive Director of The Simmons Foundation; and Armin D. Weinberg, Ph.D., President & CEO - Life Beyond Cancer Foundation.
The event provides a platform for the Houston Metroplex to join the American Cancer Society in taking the pledge “80% by 2018” and concludes with a community-wide call to action.
