The arts are a powerful tool for supporting developmental progress, strengthening behavioral and social skills, fostering self-esteem and enhancing feelings of well being in every kind of learner. This workshop will provide information about accommodations that will help ensure successful participation in creative activities for children and young people with all abilities and different learning needs. The information shared will be useful not only for parents but for anybody working with students with special needs - teachers, paraprofessionals, after-school staff and all those involved in community programming. Workshop material can be applied right away in different settings, home, school or a community venue. Participants will be encouraged to ask questions and provide examples of successes and challenges from their own experiences.
The session will be facilitated by Deborah Stuart of VSA New Hampshire and will also include a tour and overview of ATECH’s assistive technology services led by Director Dennis Bradley; a demonstration of adapted musical instruments and photography equipment by David Kontak, Assistive Technology Director at Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation Center, and discussion with dancer Kelly Doremus Stuart, longtime teaching artist and parent of an adolescent with special needs.
