Intervention: Contemporary Artists and the Modern House
Conference on Saturday October 4th and Sunday October 5th, 2014
At the MAK Center, Neutra VDL House, and Hollyhock House, Los Angeles

This two-day conference investigates the power of experimental art installations to remake the spatial and social realities of modernist house museums. The symposium responds to the curatorial shift in the maintenance of house museums, in which directors are supporting increasingly transformative art installations that both challenge and celebrate the modernist landmarks. These collaborations with artists point to alternative preservation strategies, which move away from the conservation of historic homes as static objects and instead affirm the importance of human occupation and transformation. The conference will host a series of conversations between house museum directors, curators, artists and architects to reveal the curatorial motivations and artistic processes behind these interventions.

The conference will take place in several landmark modernist houses in Los Angeles, including Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hollyhock House, Rudolph Schindler’s Kings Road House (MAK Center), and the Neutra VDL Studio and Residences. Intervention is supported by a grant from Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts in collaboration with the Neutra VDL Research House, MAK Center, Hollyhock House, and Gamble House.

A) Morning Panels, Saturday October 4th 10am-1pm
Schindler’s Kings Road House / MAK Center
835 North Kings Road, West Hollywood, CA 90069

Panel A1: In response to the recent “Competing Utopias” exhibition at the Neutra VDL House, Dora Epstein Jones talks with curators Justin Jampol, Bill Ferehawk, Sarah Lorenzen and Patrick Mansfield about how DDR relics from the Wende Museum destabilized the “authentic” experience of the VDL House. The curators placed the possessions of a fictional East German family throughout the VDL thereby confusing the perception of capitalist and communist, real and fictional domestic spaces.

Panel A2: The artist Santiago Borja speaks with critic Mimi Zeiger and curator/artist Anthony Carfello about his many interventions into iconic modernist houses, including the Neutra VDL House, the Villa Savoye, and the Casa Luis Barragan. Employing weaving, patterning, and incongruous geometry, Borja’s installations both respond to and contradict the modernist spaces that they inhabit.

B) Afternoon Panels Saturday October 4th, 1pm-5pm
Schindler’s Kings Road House / MAK Center
835 North Kings Road, West Hollywood, CA 90069

Panel B1: A selection of realized and unrealized projects will be presented by Kimberli Meyer, Renee Petropoulos, and Julian Hoeber. A discussion will be led by Mohammed Sharif exploring notions of interpretation and the boundaries of site-specific artistic projects in a landmark work of architecture.

Panel B2: Discussing the emergence of experimental preservation and its implication for house museums, the artist, architect and historian Jorge Otero-Pailos talks with artist/architect Bryony Roberts about her installation at the Neutra VDL House titled “Inverting Neutra.” Otero-Pailos and Roberts discuss how the intersection of conceptual art and historic landmarks can expand the fields of both architecture and preservation.

Panel B3: Addressing the role of social practice in animating house museums, the artist and director of Machine Project Mark Allen talks about his transformation of the Gamble House with director/curator Ted Bosley and critic Johanna Blakley. Machine Project’s multiple installations and performances at the Gamble House take place concurrently with the conference, activating the landmark site with playful irreverence.

D) Sunday Keynote and Panels, October 5th, 2pm-6pm
Hollyhock House Gallery Theater

Panel D1: The lauded artist Xavier Veilhan presents his installations at notable landmarks such as the Neutra VDL House, Case Study 21 House, Lautner’s Sheats Goldstein House, the Melikov House, and Versailles. Curator Francois Perrin and Veilhan discuss their project Architectones, a series of site-specific interventions at Modernist landmarks across the globe, and the emergence of a biographical response to these spaces.

Jorge Otero-Pailos has spearheaded the discourse and practice of experimental preservation through his subversive installations in landmark architecture, his founding of the journal Future Anterior, and his professorship at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation. In his fluid integration of art practice, architecture, preservation, and scholarship, Otero-Pailos models an alternative form of practice that fosters creativity in historic preservation.
