Intervention: Contemporary Artists and the Modern House
Conference on Saturday October 4th and Sunday October 5th, 2014
At the MAK Center, Neutra VDL House, and Hollyhock House, Los Angeles
This two-day conference investigates the power of experimental art installations to remake the spatial and social realities of modernist house museums. The symposium responds to the curatorial shift in the maintenance of house museums, in which directors are supporting increasingly transformative art installations that both challenge and celebrate the modernist landmarks. These collaborations with artists point to alternative preservation strategies, which move away from the conservation of historic homes as static objects and instead affirm the importance of human occupation and transformation. The conference will host a series of conversations between house museum directors, curators, artists and architects to reveal the curatorial motivations and artistic processes behind these interventions.
The conference will take place in several landmark modernist houses in Los Angeles, including Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hollyhock House, Rudolph Schindler’s Kings Road House (MAK Center), and the Neutra VDL Studio and Residences. Intervention is supported by a grant from Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts in collaboration with the Neutra VDL Research House, MAK Center, Hollyhock House, and Gamble House.

Panel A1: In response to the recent “Competing Utopias” exhibition at the Neutra VDL House, Dora Epstein Jones talks with curators Justin Jampol, Bill Ferehawk, Sarah Lorenzen and Patrick Mansfield about how DDR relics from the Wende Museum destabilized the “authentic” experience of the VDL House. The curators placed the possessions of a fictional East German family throughout the VDL thereby confusing the perception of capitalist and communist, real and fictional domestic spaces.
Panel A2: The artist Santiago Borja speaks with critic Mimi Zeiger and curator/artist Anthony Carfello about his many interventions into iconic modernist houses, including the Neutra VDL House, the Villa Savoye, and the Casa Luis Barragan. Employing weaving, patterning, and incongruous geometry, Borja’s installations both respond to and contradict the modernist spaces that they inhabit.
