ASCE-Minnesota Section Centennial Celebration Gala

The Minnesota Section invites you to join us as we celebrate our centennial at our September 18, 2014, Section meeting at St. Anthony Falls Hydraulic Laboratory (SAFL). This will be our opportunity to reflect upon our rich heritage, applaud the many great works we have produced, and celebrate with our friends and colleagues.

The celebration will be a late afternoon / early evening event that will include a technical tour and discussion of SAFL, a quick summary of our Section’s history, a summary of our Centennial activities, presentations of Historic Landmark plaques, a talk from ASCE National President Randall Over, and much time to continue your friendships or begin new ones with your fellow ASCE members and student chapter attendees.

Technical tours of SAFL will be approximately 1 hour in length with a 20 to 30 minute technical discussion in the SAFL Auditorium. Tours will begin at 3:00 PM and 4:30 PM, with the technical talk at 4:00 PM in the SAFL Auditorium. Tour space will be limited so be sure to sign up early to reserve your spot! PDHs will be available for those who participate in the tour and technical talk.

Social time will begin at 4:30 PM on the lower riverside plaza at SAFL and will continue through the end of the celebration. The Plaza provides stunning views of the Mississippi River, downtown Minneapolis, and up-close views of several historic civil engineering works. Social time will consist of beverages and hors-d’oeuvresno formal sit-down meal will be provided.

The Section meeting will begin at 6:00 PM on the upper riverside plaza at SAFL. This will begin with brief information on the history of our Section, followed by a talk from ASCE National President Randall Over.

Presentations will be made to the following:

  • MnDOT for replacement of the national Civil Engineering Landmark plaque for the James J. Hill Stone Arch Bridge (originally dedicated in 1974)

  • St. Anthony Falls Hydraulic Lab for the 2014 designation as a State Civil Engineering Landmark

  • University of Minnesota ASCE Student Chapter for the Region 3 Distinguished Student Chapter Award

Several prominent elected officials have been invited and brief talks from them may also be part of the ceremony.

The celebration will continue with more social time at the conclusion of the section meeting. Centennial pins will be provided to all who attend. We look forward to celebrating with you!
