Hidden in Plain Sight :: German Legacies in the Fan :: Oct. 9, 2014

7–9 p.m.

Bethany Gingrich discusses “Stained Glass, Pipe Organs and Other Crafts: German Legacies in the Fan.”

This lecture will discuss the significant German tradition in Richmond’s Fan District. From religious to domestic arts, and from business to entertainment, the German population in Richmond heavily influenced the appearance and character of the Fan. This lecture will focus on the lasting legacies of a rich German heritage as evidenced in arts, craftsmanship, and culture.

 Bethany Gingrich

Bethany Gingrich is a recent graduate from VCU in the Crafts and Material Studies Department and has been a museum technician at the Valentine Richmond History Center since 2010. Dividing her time between historic research and working hands-on with materials, she has developed an equal love for both and has found a way to marry them. Currently, she is compiling a research-based and photography exhibition about the ways that German Americans shaped Richmond from the 1860s to the present.
