Many people with complex trauma lack the ability to see a positive future. In some cases they lose the ability to see a future at all. Some of you are familiar with the CAST Canada workshop "Tomorrow Does Not Exist". While working with these folks, a focus on a postive future can cause them to lose trust in you and the helping process. It can alienate and confuse them and can also invoke pain.

Further, in an effort to 'help' someone disassemble apparently maladaptive patterns it is important to be cautious - you might be dismantling their developed and necessary protective mechanisms, exposing them to more trauma.

This day will help you become more comfortable and effective in identifying and working in this situation. Work with the confidence you are not causing harm, pain or further trauma.

During The Day,

>  Review Miller and Rollnick’s motivational interviewing principles
>  Review th "Tommorrow Does Not Exist" principles
>  Learn to use the overarching philosophical underpinnings of motivational interviewing
    in the context of trauma work
>  Learn to listen and respond to change talk
>  Ensure that the focus on the future is not used incorrectly in the context of the work with
     traumatized clients - often people who have suffered trauma may have a great deal of
     difficulty looking into the future. When it is rushed it can cause pain or further traumatize.
>  Learn how to use MI when working on stabilizing clients
>  Gain skills including - 'Rolling with Resistance', using ‘controlled’ empathy, developing
    discrepancy and reflective listening.
