Presenting on "Working with Transgender Individuals:  Developing Cultural Competency"

Course Abstract:

Transgender individuals are members of a unique minority group that are highly marginalized, stigmatized, and frequently misunderstood.  They struggle with accessing appropriate behavioral health resources in the community, and providers are often ill-equipped to navigate the unique needs of this population once they do present for treatment.   This presentation will address working with Transgender clients in behavioral health settings to help providers better identify and understand the issues that Transgender individuals face, in and out of treatment, so that they may provide more culturally competent approaches to treatment which promote better behavioral health and improved quality of life.

Course Objective:

• Define terminology associated with Transgender and differentiate from commonly misused terms
• Identify the internal and external experiences that are unique to Transgender individuals and how they affect psychological development and effect psychological functioning
• Describe specific techniques that providers may implement to help them more ethically and empathically work with Transgender clients
