Prairie Month: Field Trip to Big Thicket Prairies & Savannah by Native Prairies Assoc. of Tx & Houston Sierra Club

Join Brandt Mannchen on a Native Prairies Association of Texas (NPAT) & Houston Sierra Club field trip to several prairies and savannahs in the Big Thicket. The first stop is at Marysee Prairie, which is the only native prairie in the Big Thicket that has been preserved. Marysee Prairie has been undergoing prairie restoration for 22 years. Next, we visit Hickory Creek Savannah Unit of Big Thicket National Preserve to view a Longleaf Pine – Little Bluestem Savannah. The last stop is at the Watson Rare Native Plant Preserve to see a Wetland Pine Savannah.

Bring daypack, hat, water (three quarts), snacks, binoculars, hiking shoes, camera, field guides, and clothes to fit the weather. We will eat at a local Warren, Texas restaurant so bring a little cash.

Meet to carpool/caravan at 7:30 a.m. in the parking lot just west of the Starbucks (look for Becks Prime) in Meyerland Plaza. Starbucks fronts the 4700 block of Beechnut (south side of Beechnut, near the West Loop South). Look for a Silver Honda Civic with lots of bumper stickers.

For those who want to meet us at the first stop of this field trip, Maysee Prairie, the directions from Houston is given in the registration confirmation sheet.
