Dr. Rob Huebert
September 17th Luncheon Speaker
Joining us for the Canadian Club of Calgary's first speaker of the 2014-15 season will be Dr. Rob Huebert who will speak on the topic Is it Time to Talk about Arctic Militarization? Dr. Huebert is a renowned expert on the Canadian North and will share his insights about this extremely important political, environmental, cultural and economic region with us.
Dr. Huebert has written that Canada's role in the circumpolar world has entered a critical phase. Canada now chairs the Arctic Council. At the same time, it will shortly be submitting coordinates to extend its continental shelf in the Artctic region. Both events will significantly alter Canada's international standing. The government of Canada has promised to begin building a large icebreaker and new class of navy vessels, capable of operating in the Arctic. Interested observers will face considerable challenges in trying to keep pace with events. Dr. Huebert's keen insights and involvement will inform us of some of the key, critical areas that will impact the future of Canada in significant ways.
Rob Huebert is an associate professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Calgary. He is also the associate director of the Centre for Military and Strategic Studies. He was a senior research fellow of the Canadian International Council and a fellow with Canadian Defence and Foreign Affairs Institute. In 2010, he was appointed as a director to the Canadian Polar Commission He publishes on the issue of Canadian Arctic Security, Maritime Security, and Canadian Defence. His most recent book, written with Whitney Lackenbauer and Franklyn Griffiths, is Canada and the Changing Arctic: Sovereignty, Security, and Stewardship. He also comments on Canadian security and Arctic issues in both the Canadian and international media.
The Canadian Club of Calgary is indeed honoured to have Dr. Huebert speak on a topic that is so close to home and, seemingly, so far away. Please join us for a very special session.
