"Death is not the Enemy"

This course will examine the theological, social and ethical issues around death and dying.  Through readings, lectures and discussions, students will learn about some of the systemic issues that arise around death and dying and how to help their parishioners deal with an impending death, a tragic death and a suicide.  We will also examine the complex ethical questions and choices that have arisen because of technological advances in medicine.  We will examine, to some degree, the students own issues around death and dying.  This course will give students practical tools for dealing with various end-of-life issues that arise when serving in a church or hospital.  Attending the retreat, "How Hem Me In Behind and Before" will give you a better perspective on this course, but course participants do not have to have attended the retreat to take the course.  This course fulfills 8 hours towards associations' continuing education requirements for authorized ministers.

Rev. Dr. Martha Jacobs, Instructor

Webconferenced Course: No face to face meetings.  Students will particpate in each class from their home computers.  They will be expected to have webcams (which can be purchased for $30 at stores like Target).

Dates:  Tuesday evenings - November 11 & 25; December 2 & 9 - from 7-9pm

Cost:     NY Conference students $100.00

Students outside the NY Conference:                                                                              Course Fee $100 (plus $30 Distance Learning Support Fee).

Distance Learning requires technological support.  The NY Conference provides that support for its students; we ask other UCC Conferences and participating denominations to provide that support for their students. When students outside the NY Conference register, we recommend that they ask their UCC Conferences or denominational bodies to contribute the distance learning support fee (payment can be made at www.uccny.org: click on donate button and specify "DSLF" with student's name on the NYSOM line).  If no wider church support is available, the Distance Learing Support Fee is the student's responsibility.

Registration Deadline extended to November 7, 2014
