The Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act of 2000 mandates we all find the safest way to recap needles in clinical practice. This interactive course is designed to allow participants to evaluate different methods for safely recapping contaminated needles. A variety of needle recapping systems will be available to test. Each clinician can determine if there is a safe recapping devise worthy of consideration and evaluation in their clinical setting.

 

Learning objectives – at the end of this experience/course, the participant will be able to:

  • Identify different methods for safely recapping contaminated needles.
  • Screen the safety aspects of needle recapping devices.
  • Determine the safest method for recapping contaminated needles in clinical practice.
  • Determine recapping devise options for further evaluation in a clinical setting.

Elena Francisco, RDHAP, MS

Elly is a graduate of Loma Linda University and has practiced dental hygiene in the San Joaquin County for over 38 years, teaching dental hygiene with the University of the Pacific for 9 years during that time. She received her master’s degree in dental hygiene from Idaho State University in 2012. She also taught at Carrington College Sacramento for 2 years, where she was the dental hygiene program safety officer. She continues to research and author journal articles, as well as mentor other aspiring dental hygienists. She is a member of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association.
