  The  HRASHI Annual Holiday Season Tech Talk is back for a third year. Home inspectors affiliated with the major associations, as well as unaffiliated inspectors are invited. Last year we doubled the attendance for the previous year and are looking forward to doing it once again.

  If you have been in the home inspection business for a few weeks or for many years you have no doubt seen one or more of the products developed by Carson Dunlop and Associates. This year we are happy to announce that we have Alan Carson as our featured speaker.

  Jim Brewer, an expert on chimneys, fireplaces, woodstoves and vents will also present this year. Jim is a local guy, but is nationally recognized in the field. Many local inspectors call on Jim at his company Magic Sweep for his expert opinion and advice.

  Finally, nationally known presenter, but a very local guy Kenny Hart, the Plumbing and HVAC Guy, will present as well. Kenny helps manage the event each year and this will be his third appearance.

  Breakfast pastries and a picnic fare lunch will be provided. Stay on-site all day and talk with our vendors during the breaks.

Alan Carson

  If you've been in business for a few weeks or for a few years you've no doubt seen and perhaps purchased one of the many products Carson Dunlop and Associates has developed. We are pleased to announce that we have Alan Carson at our event.

  Alan Carson lives home inspections. Since he co-founded Carson Dunlop & Associates Limited in 1978, he has focused his professional life on this young profession. Over 36 years in the profession, Alan has performed thousands of home inspections, made hundreds of presentations and has been a prolific contributor through technical papers, articles and textbooks.

  He served as the ASHI® President 1994 and has received the Monahon Award and ASHI Ironman Award as well.  Alan was one of the founding members of the Canadian Association of Home Inspectors (CAHI) in 1982. Now known as CAHPI (Canadian Association of Home and Property Inspectors), the organization has become a major player in home inspection in Canada. He was also a founding member of the Ontario Association of Home Inspectors (OAHI), formed in 1987 and has served at several levels. Alan is a Past-President of the OAHI.

  In recognition of his dedication to the home inspection profession in Canada, Alan has received the Stephen Greenford Award and the CAHPI President's Award.

Jim Brewer

  Jim regularly speaks on chimneys, fireplaces, venting systems, and hearth appliances. He has extensive experience in the diagnosis of chimney and venting problems. He has performed numerous field investigation of installation and construction problems for homeowners, realty agents, insurance companies, and attorneys. He provides expert witness consultation and testimony. He is the President of the Magic Sweep Corporation in Chesapeake, Virginia.

Kenny Hart   

  Kenny is a second generation Master Plumber and Mechanical Contractor, with 40 years of experience in the mechanical fields. He received his Master’s License in plumbing, HVAC and gas-fitting in 1982. He has been certified by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a backflow device tester and is a Virginia Certified Home Inspector.

  Kenny is a Past-President of Hampton Roads ASHI and the Virginia Association of Real Estate Inspectors. He served on the ASHI Technical Committee for three years including one year as the chairman and has also served on the ASHI membership and standards committee. Kenny has authored numerous articles for home inspection and trade magazines and was a contributing editor for the ASHI@ HOME Home Inspection Training System and other Carson Dunlop products.

Modern Gas Furnaces

  This session will be presented by Alan Carson and Kenny Hart together and will cover modern gas furnaces, the science behind them and practical real-world issues. We will have gas furnace exhibits on-site and together with a great slideshow and lecture, it will be both informative and fun.

REPORT WRITING – GROW YOUR BUSINESS AND SHRINK YOUR LIABILITY 

  This session will be presented by Alan Carson and it covers Report Writing and Building Your Business. The owner of a very successful home inspection business and creator of numerous inspector support and training ventures, Alan's goal is to help you write reports that your clients love, while minimizing your risk. He’ll start at the macro - Why are we writing reports? What are we trying to accomplish? Then move to the micro – What do we say? How do we say it? We’ll talk about saving time, eliminating fluff, and focusing on clarity. He’ll challenge you to re-think some of things that you’ve always done. Join us as he shows you a different way to look at what you do every day. 

Chimneys, Fireplaces and Woodstoves: A Presentation for Home Inspectors

 Our third presentation will be presented by Jim Brewer and cover chimneys, fireplaces and woodstoves. The defects home inspectors observe everyday are what keep Jim's company Magic Sweep Corporation in business. A great lecture along with super images presented in his slideshow help make it easy to understand these defects. This two-hour presentation is a local favorite and we are sure you will enjoy it at our regional event.
