JA In A Day "Home School Edition"

When: Tuesday, March 17, 2015, 10:00 AM - 2:30 PM (Check-in opens at 9:45 AM)

Where: Indiana Tech Campus - Fort Wayne 

Who:  Homeschoolers, Students in Pre K (ages 4 and 5) through 12th grade

Cost: Non-refundable fee of $5 per student, max $25 per family

Volunteers: We need your help to make sure that this event is a big success! Please consider being a volunteer. JA provides all materials and training. All children of parent volunteers who teach or assist in a class (regardless of what age level taught) will attend this event for free! JA Volunteer training will be held on Wednesday, March 4th, 2015 from 2-3:30 PM and Friday, March 6th from 1:30-3:00 PM. If you would like to volunteer for this event, please answer "yes" when prompted on the registration form. If you are unable to volunteer, please consider asking your spouse, relatives, friends, or because of the focus on business and careers, anyone you know that has a passion for their job and would love to share it with students. We are always looking for enthusiastic volunteers.

Curriculum:
Programs will be available based on registration and volunteer participation. Below is a brief overview of each grade level's curriculum:

Pre-K - Our Money uses hands on activities to demonstrate concepts such as sharing, earning, and saving.

K - Ourselves uses compelling stories read aloud by the volunteer, along with hands-on activities, to demonstrate helping, working, earning, and saving. 

1st - JA Our Families emphasizes the roles people play in the local economy and engages students with activities about needs, wants, jobs, tools and skills, and interdependence.

2nd - JA Our Community explores the interdependent roles of workers in a community, the work they perform, and how communities work.

3rd - JA Our City studies careers, the skills people need to work in specific careers, and how businesses contribute to a city.  

4th - JA Our Region introduces the important decisions entrepreneurs must make based on what region they live in, what natural, human, and capital resources they have access to, and what global economic challenges they may face.

5th - JA Our Nation introduces students to business operations and economic issues in the United States.

Middle School Programs:

We typically teach these programs at the grade level indicated below, but each program can be taught at the 6th, 7th, or 8th grade level because they are so different. 

*Note: If there are not enough middle school students registered in each grade to make full classes, we will combine grade levels in order to have enough students. If we combine grade levels, we will make sure that if your student was registered in a middle school program last time he or she receives a different program this time--we will open up a section of the "JA It's My Future" Program if necessary.

6th - JA Global Marketplace provides practical information about the global economy and its effect on students’ lives.  

7th - JA Economics for Success explores personal finance and students’ education and career options based on their skills, interests, and values. It also demonstrates the economic benefits of staying in school.

8th -JA America Works provides students with examples of how business and entrepreneurship affected the economic development of the United States during the 19th century.  

*6th, 7th, or 8th -JA It's My Future provides practical information about preparing for the working world while still in middle school. Students will explore potential careers, discover how to plan for a job, and learn how to keep it. They will also discuss personal-branding and job-hunting tools for earning a job.

*6th, 7th, or 8th -JA It's My Business encourages students to develop four key characteristics of an entrepreneur: Fill A Need, Know Your Costomer and Product, Be Creative and Innovative, and Believe In Yourself.

High School Programs:

We typically teach these programs at the grade indicated below, but each program can be taught at the 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grade level because they are so different.

**Note: If there are not enough high school students registered in each grade to make full classes, we will combine grade levels in order to have enough students. If we combine grade levels, we will make sure that if your student was registered in a high school program last time he or she receives a different program this time.

9th - JA Career Success equips students with the tools and skills required to earn and keep a job in high-growth career industries. Students will discuss the importance of critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity. They will also learn about STEM careers and job hunting tools such as resumes, cover letter, interviews, and digital profiles. 

10th - JA Personal Finance introduces students to the importance of making wise financial decisions. The program demonstrates the importance of planning, goal setting, and thoughtful decision-making within the context of personal financial decisions.

11th - JA Titan introduces critical economics and management decisions through an interactive web-based simulation.

12th - JA Economics examines the fundamental concepts of micro-, macro-, and international economics.

Q & A:

Q:  What is my committment as a parent?

A: The great thing about JA in a Day is that there are no outside lessons to prepare for. Everything is taught the day of the program, so unless you volunteer to help out in the classroom, you only need to bring your students to Indiana Tech, check in with us, and let us take care of everything else.  

We ask that students be checked in with a parent or guardian at Indiana Tech Campus, Academic Center, no later than 10:00 AM on March 17th. At check-in, you will either turn in or fill out an emergency contact and phot release form for your students. You will also receive an agenda for the day, a campus map, and nametags for each of your students. After check-in, we will have a short informational session in the Multi-flex Auditorium and Theater. Students will break out into their classrooms after the presentation.

We would also appreciate your support of this program by signing up to volunteer in the classroom. If you opt to volunteer by teaching or assisting in a classroom, we will reimburse you for the cost of the program after the JA In A Day.

If you are not volunteering, you are not required to stay on campus during the program. 

All JA programs will finish at 2:30 PM. Please pick up your students from Academic Center and check out with a JA Staff member at that time.

Q:  What about lunch?

A:  Lunch will be provided for all students and volunteers in attendance. Please make sure to notify us of any dietary restrictions your students may have. 

Q: What if we have inclement weather?

A: JA in a Day "Homeschool Edition" will go on unless there happens to be a Level One Snow Emergency. If we do have a Level One Snow Emergency, we will re-schedule the JA In A Day.

Q:  How else can I get involved with JA?

A:  We are always looking for volunteers to teach classes for our traditional weekly in-school programs, as well as our other JA in a Day programs. JA BizTown and JA Finance Park are also always accepting volunteers for their one day programs. You can also participate in any of our fundraisers including our Business Drive, Bowl-A-Thon, Golf Classic, JA Quest, Online Auction, and others.
