About the speakers
Dr Ehsan Naeini
Senior Research Advisor

Ehsan is a Senior Research Advisor with more than 8 years' industry experience, particularly in 3D/4D seismic processing and inversion.

He has an MSc and PhD in Geophysics (Exploration Seismology) from the University of Tehran and a BSc in Physics from the University of Isfahan.  Whilst studying for his PhD, Ehsan was a lecturer in Geophysics at the University of Isfahan.

Ehsan joined CGG in London as a Research Geophysicist, developing industrial algorithms for 3D/4D seismic processing and Aberdeen to head up the Research & Technology Team in the BP Dedicated Processing Centre.

Ehsan joined Ikon Science in May 2012, initially as a Senior Research Geoscientist and then promoted to Senior Research Advisor, responsible for the incorporation of latest techniques and developments in the area of Geophysics into the Ikon Science's RokDoc platform.

Drs Michel Kemper
Director of Research & Innovation

A petroleum engineer with 26 years experience in Geophysics, Petrophysics and Reservoir Engineering. The first 13 years were spent with Shell International in The Hague, Nigeria and London, during which time Michel made contributions to the interface between Petrophysics and Geophysics.

In May 1999 he became team leader Petrophysics/ Petroacoustics at Ikoda Limited, working on a wide variety of projects. It is during this time that RokDoc - now one of Ikon Science's main products - was started. One of the co-founders of Ikon Science, he is now responsible for the incorporation of latest techniques and developments in the area of rock physics, seismic inversion and (numerical) earth modelling in the Ikon Science software portfolio.

Broad-band Well Tie & Ji-Fi Lunch & Learn

The Ikon team looks forward to welcoming you for a delicious buffet lunch, followed by an afternoon of seminal talks from 2 of our experts - Dr Ehsan Naeini and Drs Michel Kemper.

Read on for more details about both talks, the speakers and the agenda.

Talk 1: Broad-Band Well Tie
By extending the low-frequency content, broad-band seismic data lessens the dependence of seismic inversion on a background model. Despite that, the merging of the inverted seismic with a very low frequency background model poses a new problem: the duration of a well-log synthetic seismogram is often seriously inadequate for defining the sharp spectral decay to zero frequency. To address this issue, a practical approach based on spectral analysis is proposed to determine the low-frequency spectral decay of the seismic well tie wavelet. Furthermore the impact on seismic inversion is demonstrated.

Talk 2: Introducing Ji-Fi - A New State-of-the-art Seismic Inversion System
Seismic inversion is a mixed discrete/continuous problem, which to date is solved continuously only in the great majority of algorithms. Ji-Fi uses the correct physics, i.e. inverts jointly for Facies (discrete quantities) and for Impedances-per-Facies (continuous quantities). The result is a hugely significant increase in inversion quality in our opinion.

Ji-Fi is actually much easier to run than Simultaneous Inversion, as you are not at the mercy of endless LFBM building! Ji-Fi is better and easier; the price you pay is in increased run-times (but reduced set-up and QC times re-pay that handsomely).

Ji-Fi is a new inversion technology, and we are rapidly applying it to various datasets, some of which we will show in the talk.  We anticipate a big uplift in Unconventional plays, as Facies (ductile vs. brittle for Shale gas, tight vs. higher-porosity for Tight Oil, cold vs. hot for Heavy Oil) can be inverted for more accurately than with conventional techniques such as Simultaneous Inversion followed by Bayesian Classification.

Furthermore, a more reliable, Ji-Fi generated Facies image may have a positive impact on a number of subsurface workflows, such a pressure prediction, de-risking of deep offshore prospects, more accurate geological modelling in terms of flow units etc.
