Parent Connections Family Learning Weekend

You are invited to join us for a special parent learning weekend. A weekend of presentations and activities focusing on helping families who have children who are deaf or hard of hearing of all ages.

Topics Include:

Valerie Smirlock - The ABC's of Positive Behavior Support.  This workshop will provide information on what positive behavior support is, strategies for addressing challenging behaviors and a new way of thinking.  When children display challenging behaviors it's often the environment, the caregiving, or the situation that play a significant role in the reasons behind the beahviors.  Learn how to address and prevent challenging behaviors in a myriad of settings.

Jennifer Reesman, PhD. - Enhancing Teamwork for your Child's Care.  Many families have several specialists and service providers working with their children.  This worksop will discuss specific techniques to encourage specialists to work together insted of focusing each on their own silo, or small piece of a child's world.

Christine Yoshinaga-Itano, PhD.  - Language Learning in Everyday Family Activities.  Deaf and hard of hearing children have fewer natural opportunities for meaningful conversational interaction and as a result are less likely to acquire the full range of pragmatic skills needed for successful communication.  Learn how to give your child practice in making choices, in offering opinions, how to request information, teaching your child the language so they won't become victims and much more!
