Presenting on "Advances in Brain Science and Addiction"

Course Abstract:

Advancements in our knowledge of how the brain functions over the past 25 years have led to a vastly improved understanding of how addiction works in us and why it has such powerful effects. The same advancements have also helped us to understand why treatment works and offers a way out for those afflicted by addiction. As knowledge in this area improves, it becomes increasingly important for those working in the field to have a basic understanding of it.

Course Objective:

  1. To provide those participating with a basic knowledge of how addiction works in the brain.
  2. To provide those participating with a basic knowledge of how treatment and 12-step  programs are effective in the treatment of addiction from this perspective.
  3. To provide those working in the field with another tool to explain to clients and families the rationale for what we are doing and why it makes sense.
