In just 30 years, the success of a multi-modal transit system and Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) in North Texas has been proven. However, many people are still skeptical regarding the impact of transit on our automobile-oriented culture. This program will explore how that perception is changing, what is being done to encourage further transit use, and how accommodating growth and development around transit stations can yield positive economic results for developers, surrounding neighborhoods, and city governments.
Shelley Poticha, current Director of the Urban Solutions program at the Natural Resources Defense Council and former Reconnecting America President/CEO and Director of the Office of Sustainable Housing and Communities at HUD will keynote a half-day program on the factors supporting the success of transit and Transit-Oriented Development in North Texas. Shelley is a national leader in the promotion of transportation choices through mobility options and the development of livable, transit-oriented and walkable communities.
Following the keynote presentation, the program will focus on the economic impact of investment around transit, a profile of today’s transit user, and current efforts undertaken by the City of Fort Worth, the “T”, and the Fort Worth Housing Authority to leverage current and future transit investments to create Transit-Oriented Development opportunities. Featured examples include the T&P Terminal, downtown’s Intermodal Transportation Center, Northside/Stockyards Station, and future station options such as TCU/Berry. The results of the recent Urban Land Institute Technical Assistance Panel two-day workshop focused on a mixed use development adjoining the T & P facility will be presented.
