A mini-workshop designed for the novice, beginner or intermediate level student who is interested in building a strong foundation of knowledge & understanding of clay, the ceramic materials & their uses & applications for the potter.
Clay -Its origins & characteristics.
What are the various types of clays in the world?
Clay bodies -Stoneware, Porcelain, Raku, Low-temperature, etc.
Grog & aggregates: How they function in clay body formulas.
Bisque firing –the critical temperatures for firing. How not to blow-up your piece.
Engobe- what it is, i.e. slip clay based, stoneware based or porcelain based.
Will mix a porcelain body & a white stoneware body from scratch.
How to understand & use the clay body formulas from books & on the Internet.
This workshop will be basic in approach, but will give a clear and simple over-view of the essentials necessary to progress further as a potter or scuptor. This fundamental information is basic to all firing techniques, temperatures and methods using either electric or gas kilns
The workshop will be limited to 20 participants, on a first come, first served basis with a preference given to our members.
