DBT Skills for Working with Children, Adolescents, and Families

The Tulane School of Social Work and the Center for Life Long Learning are proud to present a 3-hour CEU workshop by Dr. Marvin Clifford will focus on skills that are helpful for children, adolescents and families using a Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) framework. The workshop will be held in Room 343 at the Tulane School of Social Work, located at 127 Elk Place. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. with the program starting at 10 a.m. and ending at 1:15 p.m.

This presentation will focus on the four areas of DBT -- mindfulness, stress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Participants will learn how to engage clients, children, adolescents and families, using DBT skills. The presentation will be helpful for beginning and intermediate level mental health professionals. The program will cover individual, group, family therapies and combined models, the middle path, what is effective, skills for therapists as well, and what to teach your clients to improve their own lives. The presentation will be didactic, case discussion, interactive and include small group interactions, power point and a good handout. Audience participation is encouraged and sharing of cases will be helpful to everyone's learning.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this course, participants will:

  • Learn the major model and skills of DBT;
  • Learn to apply skills from DBT in their jobs and practices with children, adolescents, and families; and
  • Learn to implement a model to help families and adolescents improve their functioning using the concept of the middle path.

About the Presenter
Dr. Marvin Clifford is with the Ochsner Health Systems as the Director of the EAP programs and the Director of Group Therapy. He has been with Ochsner for over 24 years and works with individuals, families, couples, groups as well as children, adolescents, and adults. He has been working using DBT as one of the models in his practice for over eight years and has had many trainings on this model. He is an LCSW and on the adjunct faculty with the Tulane University School of Social Work for many years. He has a Ph.D. in Social Work from Tulane University. Additional roles include supervision, adminsistration, teaching, writing, research and direct practice. He does local and national presentations on many topics.

CANCELLATION POLICY -- In the event you find you cannot come to our program, it is important for you to notify us before the program begins, either by email (preferred) at blrl@tulane.edu or via phone at 504-865-5314.  We will refund the registration fee if notified before the event begins, after event begins, there are no refunds.  

Parking Information 
The Tulane School of Social Work is located at 127 Elk Place. Please see the location mapThere is off street parking in lots on Canal and Cleveland as well as street parking. Since this is a Saturday, any metered spots will be running from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., so participants are encouraged to use a surface lot or the Saratoga Parking Garage. Also, to enter the building, participants will need to use the pedestrian bridge from the Saratoga Parking Garage, located at 111 S. Saratoga. 

NOTE: The front entrance of 127 Elk Place is undergoing renovations and is currently closed. To enter the building, please follow these directions.
