Program Description

This course covers diagnosis, treatment, and management of sports related injuries of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine, pelvis, head, neck, and face.  Concentration will be placed on the most common injuries to these regions, proper on/off field evaluation, physiotherapy modalities, tratment, rehabilitation, and appropriate diagnostic imaging.  

Format
The program content will be presented in both lecture and laboratory format. 

Outline

Hour 1-2: Injuries to the neck: functional anatomy, including osseous structures, ligaments, muscles, and nerve plexus

Hour 3: Classification of nerve injury: neuropraxia, axonotmesis, and neurotmesis

Hour 4: Examination of the cervical spine: range of motion, referred patterns of pain, orthopedic testing

Hour 5: Mechanisms of injury: forced ROM, compression injuries, traction injuries, illegal procedures

Hour 6-7: Injuries, diagnosis, and management: suprascapular nerve injuries, acute and chronic burners, sprain/strains, stenosis, spear tacklers spine injuries, thoracic outlet and burning hand syndrome

Hour 8-9: Thoracic spine injuries, diagnosis, and management: contusions, sprain/strains, Schuermann’s/kyphosis, fractures, and scoliosis

Hour 10-11: Lumbar spine injuries, diagnosis, and management: pars inter-articularis fractures, spondylolisthesis, spondylolysis, tumors, ankylosing spondylosis, sprains/strains, disc lesions, sciatica, and cauda equine syndrome

Hour 12-12.5: Sacrum and coccyx injuries.  Diagnosis and treatment of sacroiliac joint sprain, coccygodynia
