Program Description
This class will focus on "On the field” emergencies: how to respond and what to do. Primary and secondary surveys, environment of the athlete, splinting and CPR are emphasized.
Format
The program content will be presented in both lecture and laboratory format.
Program Description
Hour 1: Strategies to avoid litigation: training of personnel, verification of all insurance, warning signs, equipment.
Hour 2: The Emergency Care Plan: first aid emergency training practice situations, providing telephone information, activating EMS.
Hour 3: Conditions to be referred: conditions requiring EMS, immediate physician referral, triage, how to prepare an accident report.
Hour 4: Principles of emergency treatment, on the field management preparation, step by step assessment (A, B, C, D, E), AVPU scale.
Hour 5: Shock: types of shock, physiology of shock, management.
Hour 6: Universal safety precautions: blood borne pathogens, hepatitis, HIV, protocols, safety devices and procedures, management of external hemorrhage.
Hour 7: Environmental distress: heat illness, cramps, exhaustion, stroke, cold injuries, dehydration, and altitude.
Hour 8: Splinting of suspected fractures: materials and methods, procedures, precautions.
Hour 9: Abnormal vital signs and their meanings: pulse, respiration, blood pressure, skin temp, skin color, pupils.
Hour 10: Acute care of soft tissue injuries: use of ice, compression, elevation, restrictions, muscular strains, and associated signs.
Hour 11: Concussion: classification, assessment, treatment, and return to play criteria, neck injuries.
Hour 12-12.5: Treatment: laryngeal, tracheal injuries, nasal, eye, foreign body, periorbital ecchymoses.
Emergency procedures include practical application of treatment of suspected spinal injury, applying splints, bandages, CPR, etc.
