Silent Nights:

Grief, Stress, and Coping During the Holidays

Are you looking forward to the holidays?  Are you also aware of anxiety and grief, as you buy gifts and organize get-togethers, or remember loved ones who are no longer with you?

The spirit of celebration that pervades the holiday season compels us to suppress feelings of worry, anger, and sadness.  Nobody wants to be a grinch.  Yet it is often during the holidays that new family problems are brought to light, financial and time constraints are at their tightest, vacant seats around the dinner table are acutely noticed, and hospital beds feel most lonely and cold.

The holiday season is one of the most joyful yet most stressful times of the year. Let us become more mindful of the mental, physical, and spiritual strain ourselves and others face during the holidays, so that we may manage those stresses and take spiritual refreshment from this festive and sacred season as we move into the new year.
