2015 Ag Outlook

Wednesday, March 11, 2015

Economic Outlook - Professor Michael Boehlje, Purdue Distinguished Professor

10:00 am - 11:50 pm

The business climate for the farming sector is transitioning from a period of unprecedented prosperity (particularly for the grain sector) to a much less robust period. We will discuss the fundamental drivers of these changes and the implications for farm prices, income, and financial position. Strategies to respond to this new less robust business climate to maintain the viability of the farm business will then be presented.

Professor Boehlje will share his insight on all the questions above and more. Professor Boehljel is currently a Professor  in Agricultural Economics at Purdue University. He is involved in applied research and Extension education programs on critical risk/finance/strategy issues facing farmers as part of the Center for Commercial Agriculture.  He is a Fellow of the American Agriculture Economic Association and of the International Food and Agribusiness Management Association.

Lunch

12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Gaining Acceptance of New Ag Technologies - Doyle Karr, DuPont Pioneer

1:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Science has the potential to address the biggest challenges you face on your farm today. However, those possibilities can be limited by those who have never stepped foot on a farm and have done limited, research to understand the challenges you face and how you are addressing them. We will discuss strategies being used to gain acceptance of biotechnology that can also be applied across many modern production agriculture practices.

Transparency in Ag - Gary Mickelson, Tyson Foods, Inc.

1:30 pm - 2:00 pm

Today, a single message can reach the world in a matter of minutes, including customers, investors, and consumers. Access to information or misinformation is at our fingertips, and complete transparency has gone from being an “added value” to an expectation. And for many, pictures and videos have replaced words on a page. In this session, Gary Mickelson will address how this shift affects the industry and you.

"The Dean's Team: Working for a Bright Future in Iowa" - Wendy Wintersteen, Iowa State University

2:10 pm - 3:00 pm

Iowa State University Dean of Agriculture and Life Sciences Wendy Wintersteen will address how her team of researchers, educators and others are committed to addressing the challenges and opportunities for Iowa agriculture. The issues are complex and range from new opportunities in the bioeconomy to engaging with consumers about the sciences of food, agriculture and natural resources. As one of the top five agricultural institutions in the world and the third largest college of agriculture in the nation, the College of Agriculture and Life Science prepares students for diverse futures in Iowa agriculture through a strong foundation in science that is expanding to include digital agriculture, agricultural entrepreneurship and leadership and science communication.
