Applied GPS for Land Trusts

Make Your "Tech" Work For You

Taught by

Weantinoge Heritage Land Trust Staff

In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to apply GPS/Mapping skills to real world land trust stewardship issues including:
  • documentation of violations,
  • easement and preserve monitoring per LTA Standards and Practices,
  • using surveys in the field,
  • options for creating/saving maps, and
  • discussion of how to handle certain field issues—what and how to document.
The workshop will provide participants with an opportunity to build upon their existing GPS skills through both classroom and field training.

This workshop is limited to 12 participants.  This is an intermediate/advanced GPS training.
  • Participants must be comfortable using GPS, recording tracks and waypoints, and uploading/downloading GPX files to GPS units and/or smartphones.  We will not be teaching how to use a GPS unit.
  • We will spend a few minutes uploading WHLT data to GPS units and/or phones and discussing how to convert files to GPX format.
  • We will also spend time downloading the data and making maps using online maps like ArcGIS online or Google earth, but again, this is not a “how to make maps” workshop—we presume you know how to do this already.
The CLCC/UCONN CLEAR introductory GPS class is a preferred but not mandatory prerequisite.
.
GPS Units
Though WHLT has GPS units for participants to share, please bring your own GPS unit, laptop (if you have one), and/or smartphone with a GPS app (ie MotionX, TrackKit, Locus App).  If you have ArcGIS on your laptop, we will quickly walk through making a map using the data we collect.
