BioTech 23: Flow Cytometry: Principles and Methods (Formerly Bio-Trac 23)

Biotechnology Training Courses at the National Institutes of Health (NIH)

This four day lecture/laboratory workshop will cover various applications of flow cytometry in basic research. Selected lecture topics will provide a broad background about the functions of a flow cytometer; choice of fluorochromes; data analysis and presentation; technical protocols for flow cytometric procedures and troubleshooting during data acquisition and analysis.

Lecture and Laboratory Topics
Basic Setup of Flow Cytometers; Principle of Cell Sorting; Parameters for  Sorting; Alternative Separation Techniques (Including Magnetic Bead Separation MACS); Choice of Fluorochromes Depending on the type of Instrument and Application; Parameters of Analysis, Data Analysis and Interpretation; In-depth Discussion of Examples of Various Flow Cytometric Assays (e.g. Cell Cycle Analysis, Cell Activation, Apoptosis, Immunology, Hematology, Biochemistry with Methodical Protocols); Multi-color Analysis (With Special Emphasis on How to Combine Flurochromes and Fluorescence Compensation); Choosing the Right Controls for Data Analysis (Isotype Controls; FMO controls; Blocking with Antibodies); Hands-on Laboratory with 4- and 8-color staining (BD Accuri and MACSQuant Analyzer); Data Workshop; Hands-on Data Analysis with samples From Cell Cycle Analysis ; Apoptosis; Multi-Color Surface Staining; Proliferation using Bio-Tracers; Software training: Introduction to FlowJo Cytometry Analysis Software.

Academic Credit
Although no grades are given for BioTech Courses, each participant will receive Continuing Education Units (CEUs) based on the number of contact hours. Upon completion of this 4-day program, each participant will receive 2.8CEUs. Upon completion of each workshop, a certificate is issued.

Refund Policy
1.  100% tuition refund is available for registrations cancelled 14 or more days prior to the start of the workshop.
2.  50% tuition refund is available for registrations cancelled between 4 to 13 days prior to the start of the workshop. Instead of a partial refund, you may elect to take a full workshop credit, which can be applied to another BioTech program of similar length.
3.  No refund is available for registrations cancelled 3 days or less prior to the start of the workshop.  A full workshop credit will be available to you, which can be applied to another BioTech program of similar length.
All cancellations must be received in writing via fax to the FAES office, Attn. Ms. Carline Coote; 301-402-0174 during normal business hours (8:30 – 4:30 EST).  Those received after hours are time marked for the following day.  In the case of situation numbers 2 or 3, you must indicate whether you are opting for the full credit alternative at the time of written cancellation.
