Succession: The Keys to a Successful Leadership Transition

Ownership and management transitions are never easy. Many senior generation leaders hold on to ownership and management too long – destroying trust and motivation in the successor team. Others transition too early – risking the business’ future with a successor who is not ready for the responsibility of leadership. Join us for engaging discussion of transition strategies from our panel of family business leaders from some of the most successful firms in our region. These leaders have transitioned successfully, but all have battle scars from which we can all learn. Panelists are:

Christian Haub is the Co-Chief Executive Officer of the Tengelmann Group, Mülheim, Germany. He is a member of the 5th generation running the diversified family business engaged in the retail, real estate and venture capital business in Europe and North America. He also serves  Chairman and President of Emil Capital Partners which manages all of Tengelmann’s activities in North America.

Mr. Haub is a graduate of the University of Economics and Business Administration in Vienna, Austria, where he earned a Master’s degree in Social and Economic Sciences.
Bob Healey co-founded the Viking Yacht Company in 1964 with his older brother, Bill Healey ’51. While Bill Healey focused on design, engineering and production, Bob Healey handled the financial side of the company. This division of labor has resulted in a company that has operated at a high level for 50 years and spawned business interests related to real estate development, natural resources, and financial services.

Mr. Healey is an alumnus of Saint Joseph’s University and the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
Joe Ferrier is the Vice President and Treasurer of the Philadelphia Suburban Development Corporation (PSDC), one of the region’s largest family-owned commercial real estate development firms. A member of the second generation employed at PSDC, Mr. Ferrier sits on the advisory board of the Initiative for Family Business and Entrepreneurship at the Erivan K. Haub School of Business at Saint Joseph’s University. In addition, he and his wife, Donna, chair SJU’s Loyola Society President’s Board.  A Certified Public Accountant and licensed PA Real Estate Broker for over 30 years, Mr. Ferrier graduated from the University of Delaware with a degree in Accounting and attended Temple University for his Real Estate licensing requirements.
