A Collins Writing Program Workshop

Improving Science Achievement Through Writing ~ Hartford, CT

GRADES 5 to 12

OVERVIEW

For science educators: teachers, science department heads, principals, supervisors, coaches, and curriculum leaders.

This writing workshop was created specifically for science teachers. It recognizes that science teachers have a vast amount of content to cover, deal with more vocabulary than foreign language teachers, and simply don't have time in their day to take on new tasks that won't accelerate student achievement.

Participants will learn practical writing techniques and how to efficiently apply them in the science classroom. The models presented are designed to engage students and deepen their understanding of science content without increasing the teacher's workload. The strategies will also help science teachers bring their students to the level of literacy demanded by the Next Generation Science Standards and the Common Core Science Standards.

All participants will receive a complimentary copy of The Collins Writing Program: Improving Student Performance Through Writing and Thinking Across the Curriculum by John Collins.

OUTCOMES

  • Integrate informational and argument writing in science classes to enhance content knowledge, improve thinking and writing skills, and focus discussion
  • Design science writing prompts that prepare students for the Next Generation Science Standards, the Common Core Science Standards, and national assessments
  • Apply six critical criteria to create engaging unit-based prompts that assess learning and improve content retention
  • Employ the power of frequent formative assessment and “effortful retrieval” for efficient assessment of content knowledge
  • Empower students to use self-monitoring and peer feedback when writing to accomplish more in less time
  • Discover alternatives and options to the traditonal lab reports to document hands-on investigations without piles of additional papers to correct
  • Provide quick, clear, productive feedback to help improve student writing
  • Network and collaborate with colleagues in other classes, grades, organizations and schools around writing
  • Motivate reluctant writers
