Topic: Panama Canal Expansion

The Panama Canal Expansion represents one of the largest engineering feats undertaken in the last 100 years. This $5.25 billion expansion will allow ships nearly three times larger than the current capacity to traverse the canal, providing significant benefits to the local, regional and global economies. MWH is the lead designer of the new Third Set of Locks under a design-build contract awarded by the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) to international consortium Grupo Unidos Por el Canal (GUPC) in 2009. This presentation will provide an overview of the design and construction of the new locks that will serve the people of Panama and the global economy for the next 100 years.

Note: A special episode of Modern Marvels on the History Channel will air in early 2015 and will focus on the engineering challenges that were faced as a part of updating the 100-year-old Panama Canal. With unprecedented access, the program will take you inside the multi-billion dollar Panama Canal Expansion Project and follows the ups and downs of a global team to understand what it takes to upsize one of the largest human constructions on the planet.

Presenter: Mario Finis - MWH Global Inc.

Mario is a Senior Vice President in MWH Global’s Energy & Industry operating unit. He has thirty-plus years of broad-based experience in the energy and water resource sectors. He is responsible for strategy, business development, and project delivery for renewable energy, water supply, navigation, flood control, and environmental protection projects.

Mario has had responsibility for delivery of some of the largest water engineering projects in the world, including the Panama Canal Third Set of Locks Expansion Project; the Tekeze dam in Ethiopia - a 188 m high double curvature thin arch dam and the tallest dam on the African continent; the 180-m high Karahnjukar Dam in Iceland-the tallest concrete-faced rockfill dam in Europe; rehabilitation of four dams in New York City’s more than 100-year old water supply system, and development of over 350 MW of new hydropower at five existing dams on the Ohio River.

He is a FERC approved independent dam safety consultant and currently serves on the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Energy Division Executive Committee, and as Chair of the ASCE National Hydropower Technical Committee. He is also a member of the National Hydropower Association CEO Council, U.S. Society of Dams, Association of State Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO), and International Hydropower Association.
