Presenting on "Understanding and Treating Shame"
Course Abstract:
Shame is linked to low self-esteem, relationship problems, addiction, eating disorders, aggression, psychological abuse, mood disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It can drive our behavior outside of conscious awareness and beleaguer us with self-judgment, guilt, and “shoulds.” Shame leads to doubt, insecurity, anxiety, and depression and has the potential to destroy our enjoyment of life, success in work, and ability to have satisfying relationships.
This seminar explains the nature and origin of shame, shame spirals, and how shame differs from guilt. It covers the development of defenses to shame, how to spot them, and ways people cope with shame, such as arrogance, perfectionism, and people-pleasing.
.
Course Objectives:
1. How to spot when shame is present.
2. Tools and techniques to interrupt shame spirals and heal shame.
3. The nature and differences between internalized and acute shame.
