Genealogy:Fine-Tuning Immigration Research & The Value of Using Timelines - Daytona Beach (02/25/15)

Two Genealogy Topic Discussions with Ann Mohr Osisek

"Backing Up to the Boat" is a comprehensive program that addresses immigration factors such as time frames, ethnic backgrounds, ports of entry and the naturalization process.  It will also include subject matter such as indentured servants, name changes and the importance of family oral history plus the use of family documents to aid one's search.  The importance of timelines, census documentation and on-line databases will be explored.

"Chronological Logic" - Timelines in Genealogical Research This program helps the researcher to learn about different types of timelines & the reasons why they should be used in daily research.  We'll explore where one might find on-line assistance in the creation of both a basic and a more detailed timeline; it includes the importance of preparation & documentation.  Examples will be shown of both basic & detailed timelines with suggestions for source material and links for further assistance.

Learning outcomes from these two presentations would be:

1. Helping a genealogy librarian or reference librarian better understand the needs of library patrons engaged in genealogical research on these two subjects.

2. Understanding the importance of using reference texts and materials for genealogical research other than what is included in a genealogy collection.

3. Enabling the patron/researcher to achieve success with the librarian's knowledge of an entire collection & its relationship to genealogy research.

Interested in Genealogy?  The NEFLIN Genealogy Interest Group will meet at 1:30 pm.  New members welcome!  Consider staying for the Interest Group and register today.
